It began with a walk.
Our story
longtime friends with a daily walking habit, we were out enjoying an early fall day when our conversation turned to one of our favorite annual Christmas traditions. each year we spend a December afternoon gathered in the kitchen with our daughters, handcrafting gifts and ornaments. every year the project is different, but the outcome is always the same. lots of laughter, a messy kitchen table and lovely simple treasures heaped in small festive piles.
no longer little girls sitting at our kitchen tables covered in sparkles and glue , our daughters have grown into glamorous young women with lives of their own, as they have become more elegant and refined so too have our projects. our intention this year was to create a space in time that our girls had free to spend with us and to share with them the simple art of making a candle.
we have Each built our homes on the foundation of simple clean living and quiet luxury. we are deliberate about the items we bring into our homes, opting for quality over quantity and seeking out products that align with our values. we are also candle burning fiends, and one of the challenges we’ve encountered is finding candles that meet our standards of purity. to that end we have both been making our own candles at home, using the highest quality, natural ingredients to ensure a safe healthy burn.
Kellie, an aromatherapist and yoga instructor with two decades of experience in her field, pours her own essence candles for her practice and her home. Michelle’s daily candle ritual is a side effect of her European upbringing where a taper seemed to always be burning, from the breakfast table on chaotic school mornings to candles on the Christmas tree.
We wanted a hands on, tactile experience for our girls. so we began to experiment with cement vessels, intrigued by the appeal of silky pure wax housed in a vessel shaped by earth. We commandeered space in our husbands’ garages, pouring concrete several times a day. We fell in love with the rustic refinement of these vessels and the unique characteristics of each piece. a surprise each time we removed the mold.
We decided that this project was the perfect opportunity to share a timeless tradition with our daughters. A way to pass down the appreciation for life's quiet luxuries and the art of creating beauty with one's hands.
We thought that was the end of the story.
Until Kellie said, “If we want better candles, maybe other people do too”.
It is now a December afternoon. Our daughters are at school. And we are sitting at the messy kitchen table, surrounded by lovely simple treasures heaped in small festive piles. Made for you.
Sending light & warmth from our homes to yours.
Kel & Michelle
KIND WORDS…
“I appreciate the coconut soy wax as it burns so beautifully to the edge! The wick burns perfectly and isn’t getting the build up and flickering sparks like some wicks do. Of course I love the vessel the most. Super cool and modern but also rustic at the same time. Very ME 😎.
I absolutely love it and will be buying a few for gifts this year for sure.”
